I entered the Lorne Proteins Conference T shirt competition in 2023. Most times it’s a render of favourite protein-of-the-year, I wasn’t sure what new and exciting proteins were out there, so I drew AlphaFold. It’s basically how far we’ve come from structural determination of proteins. All of the AlphaFold magic would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of structural biologists in the last two centuries, their advances in synchrotron science, software, and the generation of thousands upon thousands of protein datasets.
My entry to Lorne Proteins 2023 T shirt competition. I drew AlphaFold! I won the 2023 Lorne Proteins T-shirt competition!

One time the operators couldn’t find the button for the beam camera. We did have one on the quick menu, but the icon wasn’t very intuitive, so I made new ones!

Hopefully, between the two images you can tell which icon leads to the beam camera, and which one will turn on the crystal camera!

This one is the conference poster I presented at Lorne Proteins 2022, it’s a big step up from my posters from the last few years.

This one was presented in 2021, where the fatigue of COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria really stressed me out. You can see that there’s absolutely no creativity here. And on top of that we were chasing SARS-CoV-2 papers, so I had minimal time to work on this. It’s still got a ton of nice colourful doodles. The black heading is extremely tasteless. Looking back at this, it’s all kinds of gross.

In Australia, we have to pay an extra 1% medicare levy tax if we earn over a certain amount. So I got the Surface Pen as an extra and opted for the most expensive Surface Pro 7 model to push my income below the threshold. This is the first thing I drew after buying my Surface Pro 7. It’s really not too bad for a first go. I really enjoyed drawing One Punch Man. And the elderly man is of my own design. Oddly enough, my colleague used this figure of an elderly man and the grants team advised that elderly academics reviewing the fellowship application may find this depiction offensive and recommended that it be removed.

I started drawing this as a Christmas present for my boss. It’s disgusting absolutely disgusting, but so funny. This was during the 2nd and 3rd wave of Victorian COVID-19 lockdowns between July-November 2020.   None of my lab mates think that their caricatures look anything like them…

I volunteered to design flyers for Day of Immunology 2022 hosted by La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS), which is sponsored and organised by the Australia New Zealand Society of Immunology (ASI).

During one of the subcommittee meetings, someone suggested we dress up as the SARS-CoV-2 virus and get someone else dressed up as an antibody to chase them around. This is that idea illustrated.

I always thought those journal publication covers were pretty cool, so first chance that I get to draw a virus, I’m going to make it like a journal cover! I didn’t fully draw the virus, so I could not shift it around when figuring out the layout. This is the first time I’ve used Illustrator to do this virus drawing.

These are my first attempts at graphical abstracts, and they are absolutely hideous. I don’t know why my boss let me put these out….
