A new blog! why?
I believe that everyone in STEM should have a creative outlet. We spend so much time tinkering in the realms of reality. Devoting some time to craft something untainted by the constraints of reason can be… liberating? fun? For me, it keeps my hands and brain nimble. It’s like an automatic juicer, forcing fruit through that plastic pusher to jog the mind to create, design, and innovate!
I think drawing was something that I always wanted to do, but was never any good at it. So I stopped. Like so many other pursuits in life.
When I was young, my dad asked me what sports I wanted to play – and I said “Badminton!”. He told me that I couldn’t because I was too short and fat, and badminton players were tall and lean. After high school, I met up weekly with friends to play badminton anyway. And I still do. It’s been almost 20 years since then, and I still play twice a week. He also told me I wasn’t allowed to play video games. And I still do. <3
As I’ve aged, and grown more the wiser, I’ve learnt that if you enjoy something and you’re willing to put in consistent practise, then you will improve. And if it makes you happy to create something and feel like a kid again, then do it!
My drawings are wonky. I have difficulty imagining perspective. My colour choice is glib. I’m a nerd and everything I draw is related to science because I’ve spent too many years in it. if I were a kid, perhaps I’d be drawing anime. If I were an adult, perhaps I’d be drawing landscapes and abstract concepts. But I’m a scientist, and science is what I draw.
It’s a macrophage octopus (macroctopus) engulfing a dying cell. I put this up on redbubble, and somehow two people have bought stickers of this. I have made 2 USD. Are they insane?
